By Howard Hall</div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>In 1983, hovering over
a seamount in the Sea of Cortez, I trained my underwater 16mm movie camera on a
giant manta ray that trailed a tangle of heavy fishing line and long-line
hooks.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Descending through a cloud
of scuba bubbles, Hardy Jones landed on the ray’s back, pulled his dive knife
from the scabbard strapped to his leg, and began cutting the line free.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Had the ray bolted, Hardy might have
been impaled by the lone-line hooks and dragged away into the depths beyond the
seamount.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But he never hesitated
and the ray seemed to sense his intentions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Soon Hardy had cut away the lines and he ascended to the
surface whooping and hollering with joy as he held the nest of hooks and lines high
over his head.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He had saved the
manta and nothing could have given him more joy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is how I knew Hardy Jones and it is but one of many
moments I shared with him never to forget.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>In 1978 Hardy Jones
walked away from a promising career in journalism and began pursuing a life
devoted to the study and protection of dolphins.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This decision had a profound effect on many lives including
mine.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some of those lives were the
thousands of dolphins he saved.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Others were like me, who was inspired and eager to follow Hardy as he
fell ever more deeply in love with ocean wilderness and its amazing
inhabitants.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
After <span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">graduating from Choate and Tulane Universities, Hardy was
employed by WNOE radio in New Orleans and, later, for United Press
International, The Peruvian Times, and CBS News.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But at some point in the mid-1970’s Hardy became fascinated
with the minds of cetaceans.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When
he heard about a pod of spotted dolphins that regularly visited and interacted
with a team of treasure divers in the Bahamas, Hardy dropped everything,
assembled a small crew of divers and set off to study and film the
animals.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Since 1978, when Hardy’s first
film, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Dolphin</i>, was released,
thousands of divers, scientists and underwater filmmakers have visited the
Bahamas Banks to study, photograph, and swim with these animals.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Hardy’s fascination with dolphins soon led to outrage has he
became aware of fisheries that targeted these intelligent animals.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In 1979 and again in 1980 I followed
Hardy to Japan to document the killing of dolphins by Japanese fishermen.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>During that second trip, Hardy became
the first Westerner to stand on the beach as Japanese fishermen killed hundreds
of bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Within 24 hours the 16mm film he captured that day appeared on the CBS
evening news and was immediately syndicated worldwide resulting in formal
letters of protest to the Japanese government.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>During the years that followed, Hardy made numerous trips to
Japan in efforts to curtail the killing.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>In some cases, Hardy’s efforts led to the release of dolphins that had
been herded into bays and trapped for slaughter. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I was in Taiji, Japan with Hardy when he negotiated the
release of several hundred of melon-headed whales.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">During the years that followed, Hardy produced more than 70
conservation films for broadcasters that include PBS, Discovery, TBS and
National Geographic. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>One especially
powerful film, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">If Dolphins Could Talk</i>,
hosted by actor Michael Douglas, included footage of dolphins dying in tuna
nets.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The film’s impact led the H.
J. Heinz Company, owner of the Star-Kist brand, the Van Camp Seafood Company,
which markets Chicken of the Sea tuna, and Bumble Bee Seafoods Inc., to
announce that they would stop buying tuna that is caught in nets that also trap
and kill dolphins.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>''Dolphin-Safe'' labels on tuna cans are a direct result of Hardy’s
film.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">In 2000, Hardy was joined by film actor/ocean activist, Ted
Danson, in founding BlueVoice.org, an organization dedicated to the protection
of dolphins and whales. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In recent
years the organization’s focus has been to end the brutal slaughter of dolphins
in Peru, where as many as 15,000 dolphins are killed yearly for use as shark
bait as well as human consumption.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The campaign has included filming expeditions that returned with graphic
photographic evidence of massive illegal hunts for dolphins.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Additionally, undercover surveys
revealed the illegal sale of dolphin meat in violation of dolphin protection
laws. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Hardy’s efforts and those of
BlueVoice.org have recently resulted in new laws forbidding the harpooning of
dolphins for shark bait.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
Peruvian campaign is documented in Hardy’s most recent film, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Killing Feather</i>, which he finished
just a week before his passing.</span><span style="font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">In 2011 Hardy authored <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The
Voice of the Dolphins.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></i>The
book recounts more than thirty years of work with dolphins in the wild, and the
efforts of BlueVoice.org to end the killing of dolphins worldwide.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The book also reveals the increasing
menace of chemical contaminants in the marine food chain.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Hardy’s commitment to ocean conservation was intense and his
accomplishments were profound. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But
for those of us fortunate enough to know him, Hardy was an intelligent gentle
man who was great fun to be around.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>He loved being surrounded by ocean wilderness and the mysteries of life
it held.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And his enthusiasm was
extremely contagious.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>To me he was
far more than a film producer for whom I enjoyed working on many occasion.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He was a close and caring friend. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Hardy’s numerous awards include the 2005 Filmmaker of the
Year Award from Filmmakers for Conservation, a Lifetime Achievement Award from
the International Wildlife Film Festival, the Genesis Award of the Humane
Society of the United States, the Special Jury Award of the Explorers Club, and
a NOGI Award from the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Hardy passed away on December 12, 2018 after a
long battle with multiple myeloma.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>He is survived by his wife Deborah Cutting and his sister Betsy Jones.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12.0pt;">Video of the slaughter of dolphins
and the catch of undersized sharks off the coast of Peru was obtained by the
Peruvian NGO Mundo Azul in cooperation with Florida-based BlueVoice. Based on
calculations of the number of fishing boats and undercover testimony
documenting the numbers of dolphins taken it is estimated that between five and
fifteen thousand dolphins are killed yearly.</span></div>

<div class="Body" style="border: none; mso-padding-alt: 0in 0in 0in 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12.0pt;">Stefan Austermuhle, president of

there is no enforcement so fishermen kill dolphins with impunity."</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12.0pt;">BlueVoice and Mundo Azul have conducted
undercover surveys of the sale of dolphin meat and found several locations
where illegal sales were taking place. But the number was few relative to years
past, perhaps indicating the sale of dolphin meat is being driven underground.
There will be continuous surveys of fish markets over the coming months ana
network of concerned citizens has been formed to report violations of dolphin
protection laws to Mundo Azul's office in Lima. </span></div>

lobos marinos; 7,65%, tortugas; y 3,46%, aves.<br />
La mayor parte de las especies (97,26 %) fue localizada en estado avanzado de
descomposición, de algunas incluso solo quedaba el esqueleto, por lo que fue
imposible determinar las causas de la muerte.<br />

<span style="font-size: small;">
</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span> At least 500 dolphins have been found dead on
beaches in northern Peru. The cause of death is under investigation according
to The Peruvian Sea Institute, or IMARPE, which sent a team of scientists to
investigate why the dolphins beached themselves in the northern regions of
Lambayeque and Piura.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">
</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span> The mass mortality event (MME) is occurring
at the same time of year as an MME in 2012. No cause was definitely
established. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">
</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span> The Peruvian team covered a 142-kilometer
(88-mile) stretch of coast on Jan. 28-29, traveling from Pimentel, a resort
city in Lambayeque, to the southern part of the reserve in Illescas, located in
Piura. This is the same area of beach investigated by BlueVoice in February,
2012.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">
</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span> “In five hours we found more than 600 dead
dolphins,” said Hardy Jones, executive director of BlueVoice.org. In the most
recent case, experts found at least 400 beached dolphins. That discovery comes
after about 100 other dolphins beached themselves in recent weeks.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">
</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span> Fishermen told the IMARPE team that the
dolphins were caught in nets regularly and drowned, according to the Lima
newspaper El Comercio.<span> </span>“During
2012 all the dolphins we documented were unmarked showing no signs of net
entanglement,” according to Jones. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">
</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span> The IMARPE scientists, confirmed that some
young and adult dolphins died at sea and others arrived on the beaches near
death.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">
</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span> Tests conducted on tissue samples in Lima
determined that the marine mammals were not poisoned by fishermen and did not
die from the effects of extractive activities in the regions. The marine
mammals may have died from ingesting toxic algae, the head of IMARPE’s
Lambayeque office, Jaime de la Cruz, told El Comercio.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">
</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span> Dolphins migrate to the Peruvian coast at
this time of year to mate and feed, De la Cruz said.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">
</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span>A report on the 2012 MME ruled out some
possible natural causes of the deaths, including lack of food, bacterial
infections, viral infections and biotoxins. But there is no concensus that
viruses were not involved. Some forms of morbilla virus can only be detected by
highly sophisticated scientific apparatus. Morbilla is the leading suspect in
the MME off the Atlantic coast of the USA.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times;"> “The fact is that no one really
knows why these dolphins are dieing. It is occurring at a time when large
numbers of dolphins are dieing along both the Gulf coast and the Atlantic
coasts of the United States,” said Jones. “These catastrophes must be
investigated and the causes found. There may be profound implications for human
as well as dolphin health,” according to Jones</span></span></div>

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<br />
<b>LIMA, Peru, October 21, 2013 –/WORLD-WIRE/–</b> The
government of Peru is considering measures to halt the massive slaughter
of dolphins exposed this week by conservation organizations Mundo Azul
and BlueVoice. <br />
Marine conservation groups around the world are expressing shock and
outrage in the wake of reports and videos documenting the killing of
thousands of dolphins to be used as bait in the offshore shark fishery.<br />
“Just minutes after putting out a network posting I had received
pledges to undersign a statement to the government of Peru demanding
enforcement of laws already on the books making it illegal to kill
dolphins,” said Hardy Jones, executive director of BlueVoice. <br />
Representatives from The USA, Britain, Japan, Hong Kong, Canada,
Australia, Italy, Canada, Mexico and other countries have signed a
statement expressing their condemnation of the brutally cruel and
wasteful slaughter of dolphins,” said Jones. <br />
“Peru could become the next Japan as knowledge spreads of the
incredibly cruel and wasteful practice of killing dolphins to be used as
shark bait,” said Jones, who has worked in Japan since 1979 to end the
killing of dolphins there. <br />
“If the government in Lima doesn’t act immediately and forcefully
Peru may eclipse Japan as the world’s villain when it comes to the
slaughter of dolphins,” Jones continued. <br />
Stefan Austermuhle, president of Mundo Azul, has held numerous
meetings with the ministries of environment, fisheries and production.
He reports the government is not ignoring the issue and expressed a
willingness to create an action plan to end the barbaric slaughter of
dolphins. Government officials and the national media say they consider
the revelation of the dolphin killing to be a huge national
embarrassment. <br />
“I suggested viable and immediate measures to be taken in order to
stop the massive ecological crime committed by Peruvian fishermen
illegally killing dolphins for shark bait and human consumption. It is
necessary to do more than simply conduct studies. Action is needed now,”
said Austermuhle.<br />
Of course the government can ban harpoons but fishermen could hide
them easily. It is entirely possible to control the sale of dolphin meat
but that will not stop the killing for shark bait. But ultimately there
can be no solution to the dolphin killing without controlling the shark
fishery. As long as they fish sharks on the high sea they will kill
dolphins, said Austermuhle.<br />
Fisheries products represent one of Peru’s largest exports. A
representative of one of Peru’s major seafood companies, speaking not
for attribution, expressed condemnation of the dolphin slaughter and
said it could endanger Peru’s “Dolphin Safe” status for its tuna.<br />
A ban on shark fishing is also indicated by severe depletion of the
sharks’ populations. Previous studies of the Peruvian Fisheries
Institute (IMARPE) showed the landing of more than 90% juvenile sharks
in the ports of Pucusana and Ilo. <br />
Peruvian fisheries regulations only allow 10% of the shark catches to
be below legal minimum size. According to Austermuhle, “The existing
data is enough to declare an immediate and unlimited shark fishing ban
till scientific studies show the recuperation of the population.”<br />
Meanwhile, marine conservation organizations are using social
networking to organize a response to the revelations of the massive
slaughter of dolphins and the destruction of shark populations off Peru.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
The list of arguments against whaling long and compelling,
but the key point is a shocker.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Yesterday when I went to document the first ships leaving harbor, the
first thing I noticed were the massive crowds of tourists boarding and
de-boarding whale watching ship after whale watching ship.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Mothers, fathers, brothers, daughters,
friends and couples from 2 to 90 years old traveling from countries all over
the world.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I watched as they
passed right by the HVALUR 8 and HVALUR 9, the ships that were leaving the
docks to go and kill the whales the tourists had just enjoyed.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some of the tourists walked directly
into restaurants in the same harbor and ordered the whale they had appreciated
just minutes before.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m here in Reykjavik to expose this problem, but it has
already proven difficult.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There
were three separate occasions in three different locations where men in
different vehicles approached me as I filmed Hvalur 8 and 9.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A van with three men pulled up directly
in front of me and reversed at high speed before slamming on their breaks.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They got out of their car glaring at me
until I packed up my gear and left.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Similar instances ensued with an Explorer that pulled up directly in
front of me to obstruct my view and a Tourag that did two circles around me,
looked me in the face and zoomed off.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>It is clear they know their industry is a dying one, and I believe we
need to put an immediate end to it via awareness.<br />

Seeing Hvalur 8 and 9 in the old harbor in Reykjavik for the
first time is something that I will never forget.; not due to the ships’ size,
design or some other impressive attribute one might remember a ship for, but
for the sheer purpose of their existence.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>It was the intention that the murderous sea vessels represented that had
my skin crawling.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I was entranced
by them as they peacefully bobbed back and forth in the early morning, trying
to grasp the idea of men blasting explosive harpoons into an endangered species
from the platforms I was staring at.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Over the duration of this Icelandic fishing season, Hvalur, the sole
whaling company in Iceland, will utilize the very boats I’m describing to
slaughter 184 endangered and highly intelligent fin whales and many other
minkes.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I arrived in Iceland on Friday, <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>June 7 and the first of Loftsson’s (CEO of Hvalur) vessels was
scheduled for departure the coming Sunday.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>After stopping at the harbor, I walked towards my American
friend’s apartment where I would be staying in Reykjavik.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I was introduced to the three Icelandic
women she lives with, who with utter curiosity, asked, “why the hell did you
buy a one-way ticket to Iceland?”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Understanding how sensitive of a subject whaling is in Iceland, I
thought I’d keep it to myself that I’d traveled to their country to expose the
illogical and internationally illegal practice of hunting whales.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This turned out to be a good decision
as one of the girls’ fathers was a professional whale hunter before sustaining
a critical injury at sea.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
content I have since collected has been and will continue to be uploaded in
coffee shops!</div>

I decided it would be important to see if the majority of
the population felt the same as my new Icelandic roommates.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I spoke with young people at bars and
at a house party where the general consensus was “whaling is good, the whales
eat the fish that we export so we need to kill them.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is really their only argument and I followed with a
diplomatic barrage of rebuttals that can be broken down in key points:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 1.0in;">
-Iceland’s global image and
reputation will take a large hit and sanctions against their exportation are
already being discussed.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 1.0in;">
-Inhumane to kill intelligent and
ancient creatures that have been roaming these oceans for millions of years
before humans existed.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
harpoons often miss and lead to a slow, miserable death.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 1.0in;">
-A lead shareholder in Hvalur has
recently admitted that whaling is wrong and archaic, saying it is time for
Iceland to move on with the times.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 1.0in;">
-No country has the right to
sacrifice global biodiversity for a marginal profit that has not even been
proven.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Whale meat still sits in
Hvalur’s freezers from their last hunting season in 2009! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 1.0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 1.0in;">
-Japanese companies are using fin
whale meat in dog treats.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>An
endangered species is being fed to pets as a status symbol.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 1.0in;">
-There will be less whale
watching, one of tourism’s biggest industries.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Tourism has increased 300% in two years.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Hvalur 8 and 9 have each gone out multiple times now, but
never at the same time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They seem
to be test runs, and no fin whales are yet to be killed.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><a href="http://www.blogger.com/null" name="_GoBack"></a>That will come

I am a sceptic by nature and a journalist with legal training by profession, so when I write of spirituality among dolphins it does not come from my mystical side but from strict observation. Below is a report from Mike Riggs, who observed something marvelous and not a little sad off San Onofre, California.<br />
<blockquote>
<blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, Arial;"><span style="font-size: 14.0px;">Last Friday night I went surfing close to San Onofre power plant. When we got there we saw dolphins jumping towards a couple of surfers down the beach. I paddled out just before sunset and a large dolphin jumped towards me. I've seen that a thousand times so I thought it was cool, but no big deal. When I was sitting in the water I looked back at the beach. I noticed a shiny thing a quarter mile down the beach and thought it was a dead seal. I got a wave down<br />
towards it and went in to check it out. It was a large dead dolphin, 7 ft, healthy looking (it was dead but looked well fed, no large injuries.) It looked like its stomach was out of his mouth, and his anal area had spilled out a bit. But it was fully intact, teeth, fins, everything intact. Slightly balloted. (bloated?)<br />
<br />
Half hour later the tide came up high enough to bring it back down into the shorebreak a bit. A few minutes after it was bobbing in the shorebreak, 20 dolphins came in to just past where the waves were breaking. I have never seen this, but they stood still in the water, about 15 ft apart, completely stationary with just the tips of their dorsal fins barely above the surface. They stayed 15 ft apart all spaced out, completely still, ALL facing the dead dolphin on the beach/shorebreak. They remained still, facing the dead one for<br />
5 or 6 minutes. They didn't move, stayed evenly spaced apart, all facing in. Then they slowly went back under and slowly swam away as a group.<br />
<br />
It truly seemed to me like they were showing respect, almost reverence for the dead one. It was like a dolphin funeral. They weren't being aggressive or curious, they were still, concentrating on the event. It was truly moving. I spend a lot of time on the beach and in the water. I've seen literally thousands of dolphins, and seen them do many things. But this was different. They were concentrating on their positioning, placement, direction they were<br />
facing and each other.<br />

We hope you will read the entirety of this blog. It contains information that is deeply disturbing but also offers solutions that are attainable and will provide huge benefits for both dolphins and the indigenous people of the region.
BlueVoice, working with the Peruvian NGO ORCA, went to San Jose, a fishing village north of Lima, to document the killing of dolphins for food and to gather information on levels of diabetes that could be linked to consumption of dolphin meat. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghoorArqDt9QVbI5P50pqql-7Gilnw4cF5Iwk_C-DgtyowLbNRJ4LyGZTlwmo0wn0QUA-VTSNt9-fAkZkEGJ9Jgg5LNsmAqVkWF1q2-rq7qtjQ0lfpctKIPD7B0bQhB_vMsvqi4HfM8XI/s1600/Hardy+Carlos+w+Baby+Dolphin+Skeleton.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear:right; float:right; margin-left:1em; margin-bottom:1em"><img border="0" height="150" width="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghoorArqDt9QVbI5P50pqql-7Gilnw4cF5Iwk_C-DgtyowLbNRJ4LyGZTlwmo0wn0QUA-VTSNt9-fAkZkEGJ9Jgg5LNsmAqVkWF1q2-rq7qtjQ0lfpctKIPD7B0bQhB_vMsvqi4HfM8XI/s200/Hardy+Carlos+w+Baby+Dolphin+Skeleton.jpg" /></a></div>
We expected the correlation of eating dolphin meat with diabetes incidence to be a complicated epidemiological task. It was not, simply because <i>everyone</i> in the town eats it. One woman, whose father had just died of diabetes, told us “this town is entirely sustained on dolphin meat.” Obviously the take of dolphins is far higher than we’d anticipated but what emerged from our work in San Jose is enormously hopeful.
The townspeople are terrified of the epidemic of diabetes that has emerged. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8EvTztERM6YF3yXdYXF6BaUDfgwPNY8soZau9OFzkCswc8DOcDh8jnEiWTiTOOaZCTqJP83GzFkPEqNJwH9J2X23KeDgqiC4_mT_EI_dgWP9ZtcY3yk1ns8peVwwM5F1Yn7fPZ-PRI4M/s1600/Attendees+at+Town+Meeting.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear:left; float:left;margin-right:1em; margin-bottom:1em"><img border="0" height="150" width="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8EvTztERM6YF3yXdYXF6BaUDfgwPNY8soZau9OFzkCswc8DOcDh8jnEiWTiTOOaZCTqJP83GzFkPEqNJwH9J2X23KeDgqiC4_mT_EI_dgWP9ZtcY3yk1ns8peVwwM5F1Yn7fPZ-PRI4M/s200/Attendees+at+Town+Meeting.JPG" /></a></div>The mayor invited Dr. Carlos Yaipen of ORCA/Peru and BlueVoice executive director Hardy Jones to address a town meeting that included the municipality, coast guard, health department and leaders of the fishing cooperative.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlemCrpEVlz5f4HzV2D3BjjnNxYc7DcTLexnn31TQTt7q3vnr2OKr2tCtwDfn90AVVM385ULpIfq5YURb56CHwktHY3wpsyfakEzm4G2oncrBhyFVrtbgW3ZvZvVDlbcr-XfabspJz9eA/s1600/Hardy%252C+Carlos%252C+Mayor+Sign+Accord.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear:right; float:right; margin-left:1em; margin-bottom:1em"><img border="0" height="150" width="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlemCrpEVlz5f4HzV2D3BjjnNxYc7DcTLexnn31TQTt7q3vnr2OKr2tCtwDfn90AVVM385ULpIfq5YURb56CHwktHY3wpsyfakEzm4G2oncrBhyFVrtbgW3ZvZvVDlbcr-XfabspJz9eA/s200/Hardy%252C+Carlos%252C+Mayor+Sign+Accord.JPG" /></a></div>
At the end of the meeting, at which Hardy held forth in Spanish for 20 minutes and Carlos spoke for two hours, we signed an official agreement with the town in which the mayor agrees to make all possible efforts to end dolphin killing for the health of the populace and the benefit of the oceans.
We have been invited to produce information sheets and conduct presentations to the town. Many of the fishermen have smart phones so we are devising plans to use this technology to reach them.
We collected hair samples from ten members of the community and will test them for mercury, and by analogy for organic pollutants.
We are now surveying fishing villages along the entire coastline of Peru to determine how widespread is the slaughter of dolphins.
We believe the desperate plight of the dolphins and people in the area of San Jose present a problem that demands redress. It also presents an opportunity to create a model that will apply to fishing areas worldwide where dolphins are killed as bushmeat. The clear connection between consuming dolphin meat and incidence of diabetes is a tool we can use to drive down demand for dolphin meat in places such as Taiji.
<a href="http://www.bluevoice.org/donate.php">Please support this work with a contribution to BlueVoice.</a> We have never encountered an environmental situation more susceptible to change nor any that is more instructive and applicable worldwide.

From Jeff Friedman, BlueVoice board member
This summer there have been 2 orcas born to first time mothers, and both mothers are 11 years old which is definitely on the young side for a first calf. I believe the average age for a first calf is 14-15. They are from different communities – one from the Southern Residents, one from the Northern.
A thought I had today – we’ve put a lot of hormones and other chemicals in our food chain that are causing people to sexually mature younger. Wonder if this is an early indicator of this stuff working its way through the oceans, into salmon, into orcas. Something to watch over time, perhaps. Ironically, these 2 calves may have a better chance of survival as first borns with fewer years of built up toxins being offloaded.
The births are:
11 year old Southern Resident J37 gave birth to J49 on 8/6/12.
11 year old Northern Resident A75 gave birth earlier this summer to her first calf.

This source tells me there is suspicion that the cause of the MME was seismic testing that was being conducted in the area. The government of Madagascar has refused access to scientists who wish to investigate. The fact that my source so far wishes to remain anonymous is not a surprise. Scientists do not like even educated speculation. They want all the data and then peer review before attaching their names. It is my responsibility to maintain his/her confidence so as to continue to be able gather information.
The importance of this information is that it lends credence to the possibility that seismic exploration, which involves creation of very loud sounds underwater, can be plausibly linked to the mass mortality event in Peru. Much evidence points to the cause of the MME being acoustical trauma leading to rapid ascent and decompression syndrome. No alternative hypothesis has been offered except by the Peruvian government which has attributed the deaths of at least 900 dolphins to "natural causes", a patently absurd assertion.
BlueVoice is funding the return of the ORCA team, led by Dr. Carlos Yaipen Llanos, to the coast of northern Peru for further investigation into the hunting of dolphins for food and consequent health problems for those who consume dolphin meat.BlueVoice Breaking Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770252354872333102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765358312817549932.post-76956188564127294942012-05-15T08:49:00.001-07:002012-05-15T08:54:37.104-07:00Latest Report on Dolphin Mortality in Peruby Hardy Jones and Dr. Carlos Yaipen Llanos
Photo is Dr. Carlos Yaipen Llanos with Ecological Police Officer (c) ORCA.
I've just received the latest report from Dr. Carlos Yaipen Llanos of ORCA Peru on the Mass Mortality Event MME along the coast of northern Peru.
In his last report to BlueVoice he stated acoustical trauma to be the cause of the MME. He does not identify the cause of this trauma. I should note that some experts on MMEs are skeptical of the diagnosis of acoustical trauma because of the extensive area and length of time over which the MME took place. See http://hardyjonesdolphins.com/blog.html
Here are the important elements from Dr. Yaipen Llanos' report. Note in paragraph three the reference to hunting dolphins for food. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

By April 13th, ORCA found 53 “new” carcasses of long beaked common dolphins and 6 “new” carcasses of Burmeister’s porpoises that we didn’t count in the previous expedition. We identified “new carcasses” because of their position next to the ocean, the fresh condition of the skin and blubber, and the freshness of the internal organs. Unfortunately for our diagnosis purposes, 90% of them were moderately decomposed due to the action of ocean upon the bodies. These characteristic is also associated to the fact that all dolphins died off-shore.
The field difficulties and the body condition of the stranded dolphins made our work difficult, especially when looking for viable-fresh samples. However, we managed to collect samples from 14 dolphins and 1 porpoise, a total of 55 tissues for analysis including periotic bones, mandibular blubber, and internal organs. Brain was successfully collected from a recently stranded newborn porpoise. Blood from two specimens were only viable on site for serology analysis, but blood did not make it back to our home base in Lima due to the condition of the carcasses, and the difficulties to return.
As part of the research, we decided to do “control surveys”, on April 14th and April 24th to assess dolphin presence in the beaches of San Jose fishermen town and surroundings (10 Km). We found the carcasses of seven dolphins with evidence of “harvesting”, meaning that they caught off-shore to be slaughtered for human consumption. Despite these dolphin carcasses were fresh, it was a fishermen we paid as guide named “Jose Luis” that took us to the “burial sites”. We found juveniles and adults. These dolphins were stabbed by fishermen in boats and the meat collected for consumption. We checked on the “harvested” dolphin carcasses for samples, however, we found no tissues (all were consumed) but we found intact periotic bones, (with no fractures), so it was a good “control” sample to compare with previously collected (and fractured) ones.BlueVoice Breaking Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770252354872333102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765358312817549932.post-85878028959897846932012-05-10T09:13:00.001-07:002012-05-10T09:22:16.014-07:00Necropsy Photos of Dolphins in Peruby Hardy Jones

BlueVoice has funded his return to Chiclayo to begin a new recon of the area he and I covered two weeks ago.<br /><br />On Saturday, the President of the Congress told all media that the Ministers of Production, Environment and Energy should present an explanation to the Congress plenary session regarding the dead dolphins in the north.<br /><br />On Sunday, the Minister of Production (including fisheries) called me from his assistant’s cellphone. He wanted me in a personal meeting Monday morning<br />9am to talk on "environmental affairs".<br /><br />Carlos and Elena gave him a summary of what they knew. He was very concerned. Carlos: “I just told him<br />we had evidence of the acoustic impact and we are researching possible diseases associated with the strandings, since we never recorded anything like this over the past decade. He asked bout the importance<br />of marine mammals, and why the dolphins are so important. We explained. He was impressed, and worried. He concurred with us that dolphins are to people psychologically the closest animal.<br /><br />So, in summary, we requested three things and he agreed:<br />1. To support and to participate in education campaigns for dolphins and ocean health.<br />2. To enhance the participation of Peru against whaling.<br />3. To declare marine mammals,specially dolphins, of National Importance.<br /><br />So, at the end of the meeting, he agreed that he would like to have a copy of our final report on the dolphin strandingsBlueVoice Breaking Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770252354872333102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765358312817549932.post-81068488160903576462012-04-06T09:48:00.003-07:002012-04-06T09:53:00.476-07:00Detailed Report From Peru Dolphin Mortality EventHere are some results from Dr. Carlos Yaipen Llanos's tests on dolphins washed up on Peruvian beaches. These tests were undertaken by ORCA - Peru and funded by BlueVoice. Additional results will be published here shortly.<br /><br /> As previously reported, two species have been affected: Long beaked<br />common dolphin (Delphinus capensis) and Burmeister’s porpoise (Phocoena<br />spinipinnis). We counted 615 common dolphins. All age classes were<br />affected: Adult males, females, lactating females, juveniles, calves and<br />newborns. We counted 19 porpoises, only females and calves.<br /><br /> There are carcasses in different degrees of decomposition and every 10<br />to 30 meters, none of them older than 5 weeks. This matches with the fact<br />that these strandings happened right after our previous survey. We found<br />animals recently dead (no more than 12 hours) and several carcasses of<br />juveniles and calves showed “rigor mortis” as being dead on land, then<br />stranded alive (stiff arc position, beak open, belly down, transversal to<br />tide line, no more than 3 days dead).<br /><br /> Necropsies were performed on site. Macroscopic findings include:<br />hemorrhagic lesions in the middle including the acoustic chamber,<br />fractures in the periotic bones, bubbles in blood filling liver and<br />kidneys (animals were diving, so the main organs were congested), lesions<br />in the lungs compatible with pulmonary emphysema, sponge-like liver. So<br />far we have 12 periotic samples from different animals, all with different<br />degree of fractures and 80% of them with fracture in the right periotic<br />bones, compatible with acoustic impact and decompression syndrome.BlueVoice Breaking Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770252354872333102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765358312817549932.post-36383640198555916752012-03-28T09:29:00.001-07:002012-03-28T09:31:26.828-07:00Horrific dolphin mortality north coast of Peru<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmmTgfsye_AbQ3eGMIedEJj5vrOnFPVsJKGv3Bnd8gd7qO9Q3JtXy6vRsM8iqZkmwpxcN0YmcDQsUKzzTLUc-8t28WybpUq7AOXwwg1VlH-ZnjqqOOdihL5WyZS8PPRQKLOFqcSAjI-Nc/s1600/tissue+sampling+UME+Peru.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmmTgfsye_AbQ3eGMIedEJj5vrOnFPVsJKGv3Bnd8gd7qO9Q3JtXy6vRsM8iqZkmwpxcN0YmcDQsUKzzTLUc-8t28WybpUq7AOXwwg1VlH-ZnjqqOOdihL5WyZS8PPRQKLOFqcSAjI-Nc/s320/tissue+sampling+UME+Peru.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5724986376763380978" /></a><br />I arrived here on Tuesday 3/28. Until recently Japan has been the world villain in the area of killing dolphins for food. Now it is becoming clear that slaughtering dolphins and other marine mammals such as dugong and sea lions is more common than thought and very likely spreading as world fisheries collapse. <br /><br />Rather than fighting to end the killing country-by- country or even village-by-village, BlueVoice and our associates are conducting toxic testing on dolphins worldwide. This, along with compilation of scientific papers on levels of contamination in marine mammals, will be published in a white paper, on the web via networking sites, in videos with special emphasis on reaching consumers. <br /><br />We are also working to find epidemiological information that ties consumption of contaminated marine mammal meat to specific diseases. Finding high levels of heart disease and Parkinson’s in the Faroes is one example. We are working with ORCA in Peru to study and publicize the fact that people who eat dolphins in fishing villages in Peru have extremely high incidence of diabetes – a disease that can be brought on by ingesting high levels of heavy metals and organic pollutants such as PCBs.<br /><br />It is vital that we alert consumers to the dangers of eating marine mammals, especially to prevent the consumption of these products by school children. It is imperative that we stop children from developing a taste for marine mammal meat in their formative years. This will prevent a lifetime of consumption of these wonderful animals.BlueVoice Breaking Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03770252354872333102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765358312817549932.post-24772671814979690972011-09-20T11:25:00.000-07:002011-09-20T11:34:10.408-07:00More On Obama's Cop Out on whalesThe following comes from Sue Arnold, Australians for Animals, a decades long campaigner against whaling.
